Hikkaduwa lies about three hours south of Colombo, at the heart of the palm-fringed West coast, and conveniently placed for the historic town of Galle. This small beach resort sprang to prominence as a favourite hippy haunt on the Sixties backpacker trail. It retains a youthful, informal feel, with a good scattering of decent beachside bars and restaurants. The Kosgoda turtle hatchery and Sinharaja rain forest are in close proximity.
